Hanging Rock and Cole Gap Mountain offer well-marked and maintained trails along this hiking loop.
Beautiful hike through the forest up to an elevation of 2000+ feet for Hanging Rock. The Hanging Rock Trail is 1.3 miles one way. It includes a moderate incline up a well-kept dirt and gravel trail then, turns into steps made of timber, rock, and boulders (330 steps to be more exact!). Well worth the effort for the view at the summit.
From Hanging Rock, you can continue the loop along the Wolf Rock Trail to the top of Cole Gap Mountain (2021 feet). Once you've reached the top, you'll head down via the Cooks Wall Trail next to the Boathouse at Hanging Rock Park Lake Dam. From here, you'll connect with the Mountains-to-Sea-Trail for a quick stint as you make it back to the parking lot.
