About this place

Added by Outbound

The Babel Tower Trail near Morganton, North Carolina, offers hikers a challenging yet rewarding experience within the Linville Gorge Wilderness. This approximately 1.5-mile trail descends about 900 feet, leading adventurers to the iconic Babel Tower—a towering rock formation that provides panoramic views of the gorge and the Linville River below.

Hours of Operation:

The Babel Tower Trail is part of the Linville Gorge Wilderness area, which is generally open year-round. However, certain sections or access roads may be subject to seasonal closures or maintenance. It’s advisable to check the U.S. Forest Service website or contact the Grandfather Ranger District at 828-652-2144 for the latest information before planning your visit.

Parking:

Parking is available at the Babel Tower Trailhead, located along Kistler Memorial Highway (also known as Old NC 105). The trailhead is marked, and parking is situated adjacent to the highway.

Dog Policy:

Dogs are welcome on the Babel Tower Trail but must be kept on a leash at all times. This ensures the safety of both pets and wildlife, as well as the preservation of the natural environment.

Permits and Fees:

Day Hiking: No permits or fees are required for day hikes on the Babel Tower Trail.

Overnight Camping: If you plan to camp overnight in the Linville Gorge Wilderness during weekends (Friday and Saturday nights) or on holidays from May 1 through October 31, a free permit is required. Permits are limited and issued on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information or to obtain a permit, contact the Grandfather Ranger District at 828-652-2144.

Additional Considerations:

Trail Difficulty: The trail is steep and rugged, with an elevation change of approximately 900 feet over 1.2 miles. Hikers should be prepared for a strenuous descent and ascent.

Group Size: Group sizes are limited to 10 people within the Linville Gorge Wilderness to minimize environmental impact.

Leave No Trace: Visitors are encouraged to follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the area’s natural beauty.

First time back to this trail since Helene. Definitely evidence of tree damage, but the trail is accessible and mostly clear. Dry, early spring ...
