Want to camp in the Linville Wilderness without fighting crowds? The Chimneys offer some of the best camping in the area with massive cliffs and unobstructed views of Table Rock and Linville Gorge.
The Chimneys area is a lesser-known camping destination within the Linville Wilderness. The Chimneys are a series of rock formations that rise above Linville Gorge and provide unobstructed panoramic views of the gorge and surrounding mountains. These rocks sit adjacent to Table Rock which hosts world-famous rock climbing. There are several camping areas alongside the Chimneys hiking path. Sleeping on gravel or rock is to be expected so be certain to bring a thick sleeping pad. Campfires are allowed and most of the camping areas already have fire rings.
To get to the Chimneys, follow Old Table Rock Road until you reach the Table Rock parking lot. Depending on which direction you come from, you may have to follow a winding gravel road for several miles. You do not need four-wheel drive, but it is recommended. I would advise inputting the pin in this article into your GPS to assist with navigation. Once at the parking lot, head left (South) from the direction you drove into the parking lot (There are bathrooms at the parking lot). It is also the opposite side of the Table Rock hike. Continue along the trail for half a mile or until you find a suitable camping spot. If you are camping with children, be sure to keep them nearby as there are sudden and steep cliffs along the trail.
After you set up camp, continue exploring the surrounding rocks. There are several unique rock formations and views. There are also bolts to rock climb and rappel. At night, it can get extremely windy so be certain to properly anchor your tent as well as bring warm, wind-breaking clothing. Personally, this is one of my favorite destinations in the Linville Wilderness because of its easy access, tremendous views, and number of things to explore. Perhaps the best feature of the Chimneys is that it is rarely crowded.
This area is nearby to popular tourist destinations such as Asheville, The Blue Ridge Parkway, Table Rock, and Linville Falls.
