About this place

Added by Josh Currie

Wairere Falls is one of the taller water falls in New Zealand at 153 meters, thus giving incredible views once you've reached the summit!

Wairere Falls is located just ten minutes from Matamata. If you're in the area for the Hobbiton tour definitely make sure to take some time to hike the falls as well. Parking is super easy at the base of the hike and there is a restroom if needed before starting the trek. Allow yourself at least 4 hours to complete the tramp.

You start the hike through dense, lush rain forest and weave your way higher and higher up the mountain. You'll follow the stream and cross over a few bridges with the rushing water underneath. Eventually, you climb steep stairs until you reach the first lookout. Here you can see the full length of the falls, though from quite a distance. There might be a way to scramble down to get a closer look but I could not see any path.

After catching your breath and taking in the view, tighten your laces and continue on up the mountain. This hike is pretty steep and has many sections where stairs have been built into the path to help you along your way. Once at the top of the mountain, the path levels out and spits out right at the base of the stream which dumps off the cliff face 153 meters below. Depending on the flow of the stream you can walk right out to the middle and peak over the edge of the falls.

The view from the top is incredible and on a clear day you can see out upon the infinite surrounding countryside. An perfect hike for an afternoon out in nature!
