About this place

Added by Tobin Akehurst

An incredible drive to the trail head just outside of Queenstown with a short hike to a beautiful alpine lake. A Lord of the Rings film location, a great picnic area, and kid/ family friendly.

From Queenstown drive to the Remarkables Ski Field. The road features incredible views of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, Shotover Canyon and the Southern Alps. The road takes you far above tree line into alpine high country.

From the parking area it is a short (30-45 min) walk along a pleasant trail through alpine scrub and boulders to the lake. In summer the trail is uncrowded, but in winter this is a world class ski area buzzing with activity.

Once you arrive at Lake Alta, Double Cone [Peak] dominates the skyline. You may recognize this location from the film The Lord of the Rings, specifically right after the fellowship narrowly escapes the Mines of Moria.

From the Lake you can also continue along the Wye Creek Route, which requires a full day of hiking and a car shuttle. Also, Double Cone offers rock climbing opportunities including the super-classic Grand Traverse. Contact Small Planet in Queenstown for more info or guided climbs.
