This amazing hike will take you through exposed lava flows from an eruption that happened 15,000 years ago. It will reward you with a breathtaking waterfall and unbelievable views of Mt. Ruapehu.
The walk starts with red tussock grass. After a short distance, you will walk into alpine shrub. The track up to the falls is a very gradual incline. To get to the lower falls, a long staircase through a forest of toatoa trees provides a quick descent down the cliffs on the east side of the falls. As you reach the bottom of the cliffs, Taranaki Falls appears, leaping from the cliffs. Continue down the track and come alongside Taranaki Falls at 3.1 kilometers from the start.
As you continue to hike, you will walk through amazing cuts of volcanic rock that will take you back to the start of the loop. Take the quick walk back to the village and reminisce about your amazing hike over a coffee at a quaint cafe.
