About this place

Added by Korey Taylor

Explore the region's only Gannet Colony. Take in stunning coastline with towering cliffs on the this black sand beach.

Muriwai Beach is located about 42km Northwest of Auckland at the Southern end of a 50km unbroken stretch of beach. It consists of staggering cliffs composed of sand, rock, and old volcanic material. The ancient volcanic activity about 20 million years ago also caused an increase in iron content in the sand, causing it to turn black. The best way to see this stunning landscape is by walking along a series of boardwalks that hug the coastline and offer a panoramic view.

In addition to the unique black sands and beautiful cliffs, Muriwai Beach is also host to the region's only Gannet colony. From August to March there are about 1,200 pairs of Gannet nests that make for an experience like any other. So if you're visiting Auckland this would be a great day trip to make, especially close to sunset!
