About this place

Added by Shaun O'Neill

This is a rugged hike likely to make you break a sweat with panoramic views of the Hudson Highlands.

This approximately 3-hour hike borders the Hudson River, and is one of the best in Westchester County. Start off at the parking area at the Bear Mountain Tollhouse, or at a small parking area farther up Bear Mountain Road, if you want a slightly shorter hike. The trail is fairly steep in places, and is well-marked with blue blazes. The major ascent is of Manitou Mountain. At about 0.9 miles out, there is a small area perfect for viewing Iona Island. Shortly after is a rock outcropping with more striking views. At about the 2.2 mile mark, you can link up with the Anthony’s Nose Trail, if you’re looking for even more photo opportunities. From Anthony’s Nose, look out on the Hudson River, the Bear Mountain Bridge, and Bear Mountain State Park. Simply retrace your steps to get back to the parking area. Dogs are welcome, if they are kept on a leash.

Transit Directions: Take the Metro-North Hudson Line to Peekskill Station, then take the free shuttle to the Bear Mountain Inn.

Round Trip Cost: Peak: $28.50 Adult, $14.00 Children. Off-Peak: $21.50 Adult, $11.00 Children.

I didn’t realize how much this trail winds along next to the road! I loke peaceful hikes and wasn’t into the traffic noise. Nice ...
