Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway

This scenic byway starts in Fonda, NY and travels along Route 30 to Malone, NY.  The area described and pictured here is a 65 mile stretch from Mayfield to Indian Lake.

Starting in Mayfield you will head north driving past the Great Sacandaga Lake. Continuing through the town of Hope  you will drive along the Sacandaga River with plenty of pull offs to enjoy the views.  During the spring months if the water is high enough you may see kayakers.

The next town you will reach is Wells home to Lake Algonquin.  Surrounding the lake is a nice picnic area with viewing platform along Route 5, which follows the shore of the lake back to Route 30.

The next few miles before you reach Speculator are mostly wooded with a few waterfalls tucked away for a short hike including Christine Falls and Auger Falls.  This stretch however, is bursting with color in the fall. 

Speculator will greet you with a welcome sign that has stood there for years and years!  This quaint little town offers a lot!  Park in the large free lot for the Lake Pleasant beach and enjoy a stroll along the beach or take a small walk through the Sacandaga River Community Park & River Pathway.  Leave the car parked and head into town for an ice cream or lunch at one of many local eateries.

Continuing north stop at pull-offs for Mason Lake, Indian Lake & Scenic Overlook. 

Head to Cedar River Road.  This would complete the 65 mile stretch discussed above. 

This stretch of the Adirondack trail allows you to view many of the Adirondack lakes and mountains.
