Hike Hacklebarney State Park's Trout Brook Riverbanks

This is a relatively easy hike through Hacklebarney State Park that is great for families with younger children, rock scrambling, photography, and just hanging out in nature. There are two different ways to explore Hacklebarney, either by staying on the packed gravel path or by following the banks of Trout Brook and scrambling down the sides of some waterfalls. My suggested route is to follow the banks of Trout Brook, it is a lot more fun climbing up and down huge rocks (nothing challenging that requires climbing gear or spotters). It can get crowded on weekends because of the many designated BBQ and picnic areas along the river so I suggest heading there early to mid morning.

Starting at the parking lot you will see the trail head with the park map. Head down the path (white trail) until you see a set of stairs on the left. Go down the stairs and after crossing the bridge at the bottom stay on the path. When you reach the second bridge, venture off the path and begin following along the riverbank as it will lead you past multiple waterfalls. Continue all the way to the end of Trout Brook where it connects with the Lamington River. From there start following the Red marked trail (rocky with areas of larger roots) that eventually loops you back to the White trail, leading you back to the parking lot. I encourage you to venture off the Red trail a little when it is following the Lamington River. There are some great areas with benches, boulders that overlook the river, and hidden fishing spots. Spring and Fall are the best times to visit as the waterfalls have a better flow and the colors are richer.

This is where I started hiking when I was around 7 years old with my parents and I still love going back and walking along the riverbanks.
