If you’re seeking true solitude the Lexington Arch trail just outside Great Basin NP is the way to go. The location about an hour south of the main entrance to Great Basin, plus being a few miles down dirt roads off the highway keep most visitors to the park away. (But, make sure to follow the signs from the highway, DO NOT follow Google Maps, as it takes you on a much rougher 4x4 road that has a few sections that inexperienced or unprepared folks may find themselves unable to navigate.)

From the parking lot the first mile or so can be a bit of a navigational puzzle. Leaving the parking area, the path isn’t straightforward: you’ll weave between sections of an old road, a dry riverbed, and intermittent trail segments that occasionally jump from one side of the wash to the other. There are a few markers, but careful attention is needed to stay on course. For hikers who prefer well-defined trails, this initial section may feel a touch disorienting, but the landscape’s raw beauty and the quiet make it worthwhile.

After reaching the site of the old trailhead, everything changes—the trail becomes clear, well-defined, and easy to follow. This is also where the real work begins. The climb intensifies as a series of fully exposed switchbacks ascend more than 1,000 feet in less than two miles. There’s little shade, so be prepared for sun exposure, and carry plenty of water, especially in warmer months. The grade is steady, and though demanding, it’s manageable at a measured pace.

The effort is handsomely rewarded. Near the end of the ascent, you’ll find a bench perfectly positioned for resting and soaking in the dramatic view of Lexington Arch—a stunning natural limestone formation rising high above the surrounding canyon. Many hikers might be tempted to turn back here, but the true reward lies just ahead. After enjoying the view, snapping a few photos, and hydrating, continue along the trail for another quarter mile or so. This final stretch leads directly to the base of the arch itself, offering an up-close encounter with this geological marvel.

The initial route-finding requires attention, but the switchback climb and the spectacular arch at the end make the effort unforgettable.
