Summit Storm Castle Peak

Storm Castle (or Castle Mountain) is a rocky peak that rises to an elevation of 7,280 ft on the east side of the Gallatin Canyon overlooking Beckman Flats. The hike is a gorgeous 5 mile out and back trail located just 30 minutes south of Bozeman, Montana in the Gallatin Canyon. This trail offers the perfect after work or between class hike that only requires a few hours and the payoffs (views) at the top and along the way are spectacular. The trail is located in bear country, so be aware. We were able to to see a black bear and her two cubs on our hike.

To access the trail-head, head south on Highway 191 for approximately 16.5 miles from Four Corners. Between mile markers 66 and 65, Storm Castle Road will appear on the left. The road crosses the Gallatin River over the monolithic Storm Castle Bridge. After, follow the road to the right for 1.9 miles where you will find the parking area for the trail-head on the left.

The trail begins just to the right of the trail-head sign. It immediately starts to gain elevation as it switchbacks up the southern face of the mountain, so expect to be in the sun. As you gain elevation start looking for outlooks that stray away from the trail. In several spots, just a few steps along a less traveled trail open up to magnificent views. Continuing along the main trail, the final ascent puts you just below the limestone bluffs on a portion of trail that contains many switchbacks. Be respectful along this portion of trail and stay on the main trial to avoid further damage to the forestation around the trail.

At the top, the trail continues for a short distance through a heavily wooded forest. If you look up the hill you will notice a limestone arch, a hole in the rock overlooking Squaw Creek and the Gallatin Range. Continuing along the trail, for a few more steps brings you to the top of the summit. The rocky bluffs provide an enjoyable location to sit and take in the surrounding landscapes. However, be careful since the cliffs drop off steeply. After enjoying the views, the hike to the trail-head is easily managed by returning the way you came. This location is said to be a hot spot for ticks, so check yourself after the hike.
