About this place

Added by Chris Engelsman

A popular hike on the south end of town with great views of the St. Helena Cathedral.

Mount Ascension is a popular trail in Helena. It's used for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. It can be accessed year-round, but can get icy and slippery during the winter.

The path for Mount Ascension is a network of trails that that can be done as an out-and-back, or a lollipop trail. A lollipop trail is where the first and last parts of the trail will be the same, but you loop up and over Mount Ascension.

Mount Ascension Trail Network

  • Start out from the Beattie Street Parking
  • The first .4 miles will be on a trail called Pay Dirt then you'll intersect with Easy Rider Trail.
  • Go left on Easy Rider Trail for a short distance and turn right onto Pail Rider Trail.
  • Follow Pail Rider Trail for about .2 miles when you'll hit the 2006 Trail (north side).
  • Continue straight ahead on the 2006 Trail (north side) for about .8 miles then you can turn left onto Mount Ascension Ridge Trail
  • Follow the Mount Ascension Ridge Trail to the summit for some great views, then continue East down to Mt Ascension Loop Trail. This section is about .25 miles long.
  • Once you hit the Mt Ascension Loop Trail, hang a left and follow that back to the 2006 Trail (north side).
  • Turn right at the 2006 Trail (north side) and head back the same way you came.
