Deer Island is a gem of the Gulf Coast, consisting of white beaches, a slash pine maritime forest, and marshes. It’s a great place to go to escape from the city and get back to nature.
Having once been part of the mainland, Deer Island is no more than a 5-minute paddle from Biloxi Beach. The island has been lengthened hundreds of feet in the past decade to protect against hurricane damage. Breakwaters/berms have also been created to reduce the effects of erosion on the island.
The best place to park is at the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor next to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. From there, launch your kayak from Biloxi Beach and paddle across the narrow channel to Deer Island.
There are little to no visitors on Deer Island during the week. On the weekends, however, you will see plenty of kayakers, boaters, and anglers. Whenever you go, please take all trash out with you, be sure to take plenty of pictures, and have a great day out in nature!
