About this place

Added by Michael McKenzie

Hiking Oberg Mountain provides with you with a very photogenic landscape and awesome lookouts over the Superior National Forest. If you head here in the autumn months, this is a great place to see fall color.

The hike to the top of Oberg Mountain is short and sweet. The trail starts off with a climb of roughly 230ft in about a half of a mile before getting to the top of Oberg Mountain. At the top of the climb the trail forks, you can go either way since the trail loops around the top. I suggest you go right first as the lookouts will get better as you go around the top. The hike on top is about a mile before you get back to the intersection where you can head back down the trail you came up which will take you back to the parking lot.

This trails has multiple lookouts over the Superior National Forest, Lake Superior, and Oberg Lake. Many of the lookouts do not have railing so be smart. The trail is accessible all of the year. However, fall is my favorite time to go because of the amazing fall colors of the area.

To get the trailhead and parking, traveling North from Duluth, MN, look for Onion River Road on the left five miles North of Tofte, MN. If you are traveling from Canada or Grand Marias look for the turn off onto Onion River Road 4 miles south of Lutsen, MN on your right. Once you turn on toOnion River Road drive 2 miles until you get to the parking lot. The trailhead to Oberg Mountain is North of the parking lot.

Worth the effort, but this was moderate to hard hike
Beautiful overlooks(be careful-no railings). First part of the hike is pretty steep-there are a lot of ups and downs. Lots of rocks and roots ...

Nice/but fog is not bueno
Go when the weather is nice, so you can see the view, good workout though.

Awesome
Easily some of the best views in the area! The hike up to the loop is tough but don't let that deter you. It is definitely worth it!
