Kayak Pigeon Creek to Lake Michigan

The start and end of this adventure is at the dead end of Holly Drive. There is a small boat launch parking lot that sometimes has a porta-john, although I would not count on it. You can kayak upstream (to the right) to enjoy a peaceful paddle around and through the reeds, and I have seek many muskrats up that way.

This adventure focuses on paddling the ever increasing difficulty that downstream leads to. You will launch and go left, following the gentle wind of the stream and ducking under the bridge. On the other side lies Pigeon Lake and Port Sheldon. The port is to the left, with an energy plant to the right. Continue across the lake and head through the end of the port. Stick to the middle or left as soon as you leave the lake and start paddling through the corridor towards Lake Michigan. Here, the wind will probably pick up and the water gets choppy. By the time you reach the end of the pier, you can expect 1-3ft waves on the average day, but higher right before or after big storms. Only go out this far if you have the experience, equipment, and buddies nearby. Flipping out here can be quite dangerous! That being said, you can fine tune this adventure to match whatever skill level you have by simply turning around when you are on the border of being uncomfortable. When you return, you'll have the wind and waves at your back, so it will be much quicker despite having to go up the stream for a quarter mile. In total, if you go all the way out to Lake Michigan and back this trip is 2.5 miles. I've seen some amazing sunsets here, and one of my favorite trips was coming out in the winter and kayaking around the huge icebergs that were floating in from the Lake. 

Whatever you do and whenever you go, be sure to follow all applicable laws as this area is patrolled regularly by police boats. Bring a life jacket, some sunscreen, and a buddy! Most importantly, remember to HAVE FUN!
