Hike to O Kun de Kun Falls

Located roughly 8 miles north of Bruce Crossing on Highway 45, the O Kun de Kun Trailhead is a small turnoff located on the right side of the highway. The trailhead offers limited parking, but the trail is rarely busy. At the beginning the trail, hikers can see the blue blazes of the North Country Trail, an interstate trail stretching from North Dakota to New York. The trailhead is also east of Sandstone Creek (1.0 miles west). The beginning of the trail is well-maintained with gravel and wooden planks. After 0.3 miles, the trail switches to dirt. On normal dry days, the trails is an easy stroll to the river and falls, however, after any rainfall, the trail turns into a muddy, slippery mess. Be prepared with shoes and clothing that can get dirty. 

The trail approaches the Baltimore River at 1.2 miles. There is a small waterfall, Peanut Butter Falls, and a small swimming hole. Continuing on the trail, hikers will reach the larger plunge falls. O Kun de Kun is roughly 30 feet high and 30 feet wide, and varies throughout the year based on water levels to the area. Downstream, hikers can see the Baltimore River Suspension Bridge from the falls. If you're feeling adventurous and sure-footed, it is possible to climb behind the falls. Depending on the water levels, you may or may not get wet doing so.
