This impressive lighthouse is perched on the shores of Lake Michigan, marking the entrance to the southern end of the Manitou Passage. The beach is a hidden gem on Lake Michigan - a great place to swim, hunt for petoskey stones, sunbathe, and watch the sunset.
If you find yourself cruising M22 between Crystal Lake and Lake Michigan, be sure to check out this beautiful lighthouse. Turn off of M22 on to Point Betsie Rd. and follow the curving road all the way to Lake Michigan. There isn't a designated parking lot for the lighthouse, but you can park anywhere along the road. You'll see cars lined up, especially around sunset!
The entrance to the beach is to the left of the lighthouse. You can walk south along the beach hunting for the state's infamous Petoskey Stone.
If it's summer, enjoy a dip in Lake Michigan but remember your watershoes because there are lots of stones! If the water is rough, you'll see surfers or kitesurfers in the water. Pack a picnic and stay for the sunset and a campfire. It doesn't get any more 'Pure Michigan' than this!
In the winter the road to the lighthouse may not be plowed. AWD is highly recommended as it can get steep and slippery. If the road looks bad, consider parking on M22 and hiking in to the lighthouse (approximately .75 miles). It's worth the work to see the waves crashing on shore and the ice forming on the lighthouse!
