A gorgeous 250+ year old Spanish Mission deep in the heart of the Sierra de la Giganta
Known informally as "San Javier" or "Mission San Javier", the officially named Misión San Francisco Xavier de Viggé-Biaundó is Spanish mission founded in 1758 and is surrounded by the tiny hamlet of San Javier. Trips to explore the mission are one of the most popular side trips for people visiting the Loreto area.
Behind the mission is short path to an olive tree which at 300+ years old is said to be the first and oldest olive tree in Baja.
To get to San Javier take the well-marked road to San Javier just south of Loreto and across from the airport. The well-paved road winds into the mountains eventually ending in San Javier in front of the mission. It is roughly 40 km from downtown Loreto to San Javier.
There are two restaurants nearby with very slow wifi. There is no cell service or fuel available.
On festival days and weekends services are still performed at the church.
