About this place

Added by Jenn Gonzalez

Point Lookout State Park offers a beautiful beach with options for camping, fishing, and boating.

Point Lookout State Park is at the southern most tip of the joining of the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River in St. Mary's County, Maryland. The park offers many activities such as fishing, canoeing, boat launch, camping and lounging at the beach.

When you arrive, there are multiple places to park and enjoy the park. The best spot is at the fishing pier where you can have direct beach access. There are signs that say no swimming but there are seashells galore, rocks to walk on, and ospreys to watch. The beach was incredibly clean.  There is also a separate beach for pets if you'd like to take your dog.

After spending time at the beach, drive down to the point to see the old lighthouse and read about the history of the area.  The lighthouse is not open (there is a fence around it) but it is a very cool structure.  You can read about the hospital that was once in that location as well as the Prisoner of War camp that held thousands of confederate soldiers.

There are picnic areas for having lunch and places to launch a boat. It is easy to fill a day at the park.
