About this place

Added by Shannon Kalahan

Great photography opportunities. Easily accessible park with plenty of parking. Dark skies allow you to see the Milky Way and northern lights (kp 6+) with your naked eye. Scuba diving and fishing allowed on site.

Officially named Cape Neddick Light, though more commonly known as Nubble Light, this lighthouse is part of the National Register of Historic Places and is a local favorite for photography. The lighthouse park is located just over the New Hampshire / Maine state line in New England, in York, ME.

For photography purposes, Nubble Light has a lot of great characteristics. The mainland Sohier Park, from which visitors can view the lighthouse, is filled with interesting rock formations that provide infinite interesting foreground compositions in any season. The lighthouse is also located in a dark sky area, so if you want to try your hand at night photography, it is possible to view both the milky way and during large solar storms (kp 6+), the northern lights. As a bonus during night photography, the lighthouse is bright enough to give you an easy focus point for an overall sharp image.

I've been here to photograph the lighthouse about 5 times over the last 4 years, in every season. It's an easily accessible park, with plenty of parking and restrooms. There are some sections of rock within Sohier Park that are marked as off limit, and of course, common sense applies during high tide, as the rocks closer to the water tend to be slick.

Beautiful coastal Maine scenery
Great spot for photos and to enjoy coastal Maine. There are plenty of spots to hang out and eat lunch near the lighthouse.
