About this place

Added by Tate Yoder

Duration - 4 hours. Distance - approx. 3 miles round trip. Little to no crowds. Easy parking. Enjoy small, sandy beaches to yourself.

This scenic coastline is one of my favorites to travel whether it be on the water or on the shore. The route passes a large sand bar that is great for hanging out on, and enjoying a picnic. This coast also has quite a few summer houses, but it's not hard to find an open spot without bothering anyone to take a break and chill out along the shore. The launching area is public, but known by few.

From the Blue Hill round about, take South St. for 2.4 miles until turning left onto Route 175. Travel this route that has beautiful views and go over a unique reversing falls bridge. After 2.1 miles on this road, you will see a sign for Wharf Rd on the left. Go down about 50 yards, and park on the right. You will see a dock, with a launching area and a beach.

Kayak northward, passing a sandbar, summer houses, giant boulders, docks, and small sandy beaches. As you paddle along, keep an eye out for an open sandy spot along the shore to stop and have lunch. Follow this shore until you see a bridge. Be careful not to get too close this bridge, as the tides create rapids that are not pleasant to get into unless you know what you're doing. You will also see small islands which can be explored. Head back, stop and relax, take pictures, or simply drift with the waves while enjoying the peaceful shore-route of South Blue Hill, Maine.
