Fly Fish Lower Dam at Rapid River, Maine

Getting to Rapid River can be a bit of a trek, as the 10 or so miles leading to it is a maze of logging roads and the cell service is spotty at best. Here is a rundown of the route:

Driving Northeast on Rt 26, take a sharp right onto Andover RD (East B Hill Road)

After 2.1 miles, turn left onto Brown County RD (this is where the dirt road begins)

After 1.2 miles, Brown County RD turns into Popple Dam RD

0.9 miles after that, make a left to continue on Popple Dam RD

Continue this way for 4.8 miles until the road forks, then make a left

Drive for roughly 2.1 miles. There is an informal parking lot on the left. On the right is a large clear cut strip. You'll have to walk from here but if you follow the clear cutting it will take you to the river. There is also a trail 50 yards down the clear cut on the right that will take you right to Lower Dam It's a 15 minute walk through the woods to get to the river.

Rapid River is well known as one of the last strongholds on the east coast for 5+ pound Brook Trout. The biggest fish hole up under the old dam in a deep pool. You can also expect to catch Landlocked Salmon and Smallmouth bass. The river is catch  and release only and barbless hooks are required. This is to preserve the native trout.
