About this place

Added by Sarah Gooch

This tucked-away cobblestone beach provides a break from the crowds in Acadia National Park, as well as a remarkable opportunity to listen to the crackling of the rocks in the water.

Little Hunters Beach is a hidden gem in Acadia National Park.  It’s the perfect place to get away from the crowds and listen to the crashing waves and the crackling of the cobblestones.  You might be tempted to venture in to the water, but beware – cool waters and strong currents do not make this a swimmable beach.

The beach is not well marked – you’ll have to keep your eye out as you drive along Park Loop Road for a wooden stair case and information sign on the left, about 3 miles past Otter Point.  There is a small pullout along the road for you to park.  After crossing the road, make your way down the wooden staircase, taking note of the sign cautioning against removal of the cobblestones.  If you plan on spending an extended amount of time on the beach, you might want to bring chairs as the cobblestones are not nearly as comfortable as sand.

To the left of the information post is a worn path that will lead you to a view looking down on the beach.  Use caution here as the area is not fenced and can be slippery when wet.

If you stand in the middle of the beach, you can hear the crackling of the cobblestones as the waves recede from the shore. Listen carefully around the 10 second mark; it sounds almost like firecrackers.
