The Sequoia National Forest is known for the Kern River and the available rapids which can be utilized for Rafting and Kayaking. Many of the more publicly crowded campsites are along the river; but, if you want to get away from the crowds, you can easily drive up any of the open dirt paths and find seclusion and solitude along any of the creeks that feed the Kern River.
There are several dispersed campsites found throughout the Sequoia National Forest. The majority can be found by driving on any of the OHV accessible roads. This particular campsite can be found at coordinates 35.89759, -118.4628. In order to get to the campsite, use Google Maps to get you to the area. The OHV roads required to get to the site are visible via the Satellite view. There is no service in the forest, so be sure to download the map before you get there!
There is a nice pull off for your car right before the path that leads to the campsite. If you walk about 10 meters up the path, you'll notice a fire ring and several logs, which can be utilized as camp chairs and tables. Don't worry too much about hauling large amounts of wood if campfires are your thing! There is plenty of driftwood and fallen branches for you to keep your fire going all night. Just be sure to bring an axe or hatchet. You will need a fire permit to have a campfire or operate a camp stove. You can get yours here.
If you pass the fire ring and walk up the makeshift rock stairs you'll find a flat area suitable for pitching a tent or two. This area is surrounded by rocks and boulders, so be sure to watch your step, especially at night. To the right of the campsite, there are two waterfalls formed from Salmon Creek. There are several trees surrounding the edge of the water, which provide a perfect environment for setting up a hammock allowing you to relax as you listen to the sound of the waterfalls. Behind the campsite you can climb the large boulders and get a perfect view of the sun as it sets over the mountains.
There is plenty of space for you to explore, and since these roads are less traveled, you'll have the entire area to yourself!
If this particular campsite happens to be taken when you arrive, don't fret! There are several dispersed sites along the creek, you'll just have to get out and explore.
** NOTE: Since this is a dispersed campsite, there is no trash removal service. Practice Leave No Trace and pack out what you pack in. If you see trash, pick it up and leave the campsite better than you found it.
