Wolf Mountain is as the highest point in the Sierra Nevada foothills south of Grass Valley and west of I-80, and gives expansive views of the Central Valley of California: north to Mt. Shasta, west across the Sutter Buttes, and south to Mount Diablo and the Bay Area. On its eastern side the mountains of Lake Tahoe and the Desolation Wilderness are revealed.
While all of the hiking trails to the Wolf Mountain summit cross private land, Wolf Mountain Road provides public access to several excellent viewpoints overlooking the Central Valley and the nearby ruins of old radio towers.
To get there take McCourtney Road west from CA Highway 49/20 and go 3.2 miles and go left onto Wolf Mountain Road. Go 3.8 miles on Wolf Mountain Road until it dead-ends in front of the fire lookout on the left.
Park on the right side of the road and take the clear use trail to the overlook. There are several trails heading down the mountain but these cross private land.
Note: do not climb the fences or attempt to access the the radio tower or fire lookout, as these are on private land and would constitute trespassing.
