Catch a Sunset at Pyramid Lake

Catching a Sunset at Pyramid Lake is a unique experience. The high desert lake is surrounded by mountains, and strange rock formations. The reds and browns of the surrounding desert landscape light up during sunset. Combined with the blue salt water lake make for an amazing sunset. The lake will actual change from a blue to grey color depending on the clouds above. It can be spectacular depending on the lighting.

During late spring and early summer, storms will roll in and kick up dust over the lake, creating an even more elaborate array of colors. I recommend catching the sunset from the southern side of the lake. The sun will set just over the north west section of the lake. This will allow you to capture the entire lake and the surrounding landscape. You can even drive your vehicle down to the shore line for the best shots and experience. A 10 dollar permit is required.

Pyramid Lake is one of the largest lakes in Nevada and is well known for its great fishing. U.S. presidents have even ventured to this lake to try and catch ancient Cui-ui fish or the world-famous Lahontan cutthroat trout. In addition to excellent fishing at Pyramid Lake, other outdoor activities include kayaking, SUP, mountain biking, and hiking.

From Reno, Nevada take US-395 North for roughly 2 miles to exit 70A for N McCarran Blvd. Take N McCarran Blvd for 2 miles to Pyramid Way/NV-445. Turn left and take NV-445 for 31 miles until you reach the marina in Sutcliff, Nevada. Since the entire lake is within the Paiute Indian reservation, you must obtain a day pass for $10 for any travel off the main road. (NV-445) If you plan on just photographing the lake from the main road, you do not need to obtain a day pass.

Enjoy this beautiful salt water lake in the middle of the Nevada desert. Although the lake offers many awe inspiring photo opportunities, check with the park rangers, because many sections of the lake are restricted due to recent vandalism in the area. Areas such as the needles are currently off limits to the public. The rangers are currently working on a solution to reopen these areas for people to be able to enjoy respectfully.
