About this place

Added by Josh Currie

Drake Lake is a small mountain lake on top of the ridge overlooking Warner Valley.

The hike starts at the Warner Valley Trailhead and winds up the mountain until you reach the lake. The first 2 miles or so are very pleasant walk through the woods until you reach the last portion which is essentially straight up the mountain side.

This portion of the trail can be very slippery because of the steep nature of the trail and the loose rock. Though this part of the hike is pretty strenuous, the view of the valley and the snow capped peaks are beautiful. Once you reach the summit, you'll walk under the trees until it opens up to Drake Lake.

We hiked to the lake towards the end of the season so the water was actually quite low. I have seen images of the lake in Spring and it's pretty full after all the snow melt. We hiked up fishing poles with us and tried to drop in a line but because of the water was so shallow without any grasses in the shallows, I do not think there was any fish in the lake. It looks like there are a number of suitable camping spots by the lake if you are looking to hike out over night.

Because of the small nature of the lake I would recommend visiting this spot in the spring when there is more water in the lake. Other than that it was a great hike with awesome views!

A great spot for a base camp is Warner Valley Campground
