About this place

Added by Skyler Hardy

Witness California's largest Hydraulic Mine in Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park. From the land damaging mining tactics that were used. Look at towering cliffs carved out of a mountain. Hike around 20 miles of trails and wander around the old mining town.

Check in and pay for your parking or present California State Parks Pass at the museum building in North Bloomfield.  After paying for parking there are several different options to get onto the Diggins Loop trail.  Access to the Diggins Loop trail can be found by the Park Headcounters by jumping onto the Church Trail.  Access to the loop trail is also found at the Diggins Overlook.  Dogs are not allowed on the trail.  At several point along the trail there are scraps of tools that were used from the mines active days.

From the Trail head continue on the trail either right or left.  At some point the trail is not very established and there are markers on the surrounding shrubs as well as posts in the ground with a metal tab the tells you the mileage.  If trail is hard to stay on at this point follow the base of the cliff... the trail follows it for some time.  Camping reservations can be made at Reserveamerica.com.  While on your way home, if passing through Auburn stop at Fosters Freeze for some grub!

Great history
Beautiful hike with a lot of neat history to learn. This is the place the first environmental legislation was born.
