About this place

Added by Bureau of Land Management - California

Cheney Creek Primitive Campsite is a hike-in or bike-in camping area from the Bizz Johnson Trial. The camping area is located adjacent to the Susan River for fishing and swimming.

Cheney Creek has a bulletin board and toilet but no developed campsites. There is a primitive hike in or bike in campsite at Cheney Creek along the Bizz Johnson Trail, which is beside the Susan River. The primitive self contained camping site is 1.5 miles east of the Devil's Corral Trailhead on the Bizz Johnson Trail or 5 miles west of the Susanville Depot trailhead on the Bizz Johnson Trail. Pack it in Pack it out applies to all use of the site. There is no toilet so be prepared to "Leave No Trace" when you dig a cat hole. There is one fire ring on site. The Susan River is directly adjacent to the site affords good opportunities for fishing (catch and release only, barbless hooks, no live bait).

There are also good opportunities for wading and swimming at a nice swimming hole downstream about 1/3 of mile. A railroad tunnel, 400 feet long, on the Bizz Johnson Trail is downstream of the Cheney Creek campsite about 1/4 mile. The second tunnel, 800' long is another 1/4 mile downstream of the west tunnel along the Bizz Johnson Trail. Three old railroad bridges across the Susan River are near the tunnel and one three span railroad bridge is upstream of the Cheney Creek campsite.

Dogs are allowed, but must be leashed or under owners voice command.
