About this place

Added by Cat Ekkelboom-White

A hike to one of the most iconic landmarks of the UNESCO Dolomites world heritage site in northern Italy.

You start this easy hike from just before the toll road station on the road up from Misurina to Rifugio Auronzo. As you are looking towards the peaks and the trail starts on the right side of the road.

The first part of the route takes you through some forest and across a couple of streams before it rises up slowly to above the tree line. Here you'll cross a more open field and traverse across towards the access road.

Here you have 2 options. You can continue on the path that you are on or cross the road and walk up on the other side. (There was still a lot of snow when we did this hike in early May, so we decided to cross over the road to where there was less snow.)

Once you've crossed the road, it's a slightly steeper uphill section which is alongside a small waterfall that is cascading down the rocks. There's some loose gravel here so watch your step.

The road and the path both end at the Rifugio Auronzo (open from June - October) which is at the base of the Drei Zinnen (3 Peaks).

From here it's possible to walk along the trail towards the Drei Zinnen Hütte to get views from the other side of the peaks as well.

When you've taken lots of pictures, simply head back down the way you came up.

** If you're looking to cut out the largest part of the hike, it is possible to drive up the toll road all the way to the Rifugio and it costs €25. But I don't know why you would. Hiking up is much more fun! **
