An alternative way to hike to one of the most iconic spots in the Dolomites

Seceda is one of the most famous (and most photographed) spots in all of the Italian Dolomites. This summer I decided to finally visit it to see if it was really worth the hype, and to see if there was a way to escape the worst of the crowds.

Most tourists visit Seceda from Ortisei, taking the cable car up. But for anyone who loves to hike there's also another way (that's also cheaper!).

Instead of taking the Seceda cable car from Ortisei, we took the Col Raiser gondola from St Christina. From the top of the gondola, follow the no.1 trail towards Seceda. The hike takes around 1 hour to reach the ridge line, and is uphill almost all the way.

Whilst most people's goal is the Seceda views, don't forget to look at the views behind you too. The alpine meadows are filled with wildflowers and the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites are all around.

Once you reach the ridge line, you'll find numerous spots to take pictures. The local landowners have put fences up in some areas as there are some signs of ground erosion happening in places. Whilst it might be tempting, please resist the urge to jump the fences. Keep walking until the furthest point where the fences end and you'll find a proper viewing point and the best views of the Seceda ridge line.

For the hike back, if you've still got the energy, I highly recommend taking the detour via Pieralongia and Rifugio Firenze on your way to the Col Raiser, as there are so many more stunning views to be had along this trail.
