Great spot to hit the water near Belknap, IL.
Mermet Lake Conservation is an old Cypress and Tupelo Swamp that has been turned into a shallow lake by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. It was developed in 1949 as a waterfowl hunting destination. Each October the lake is closed and only accessible by hunters, but the Spring and Summer bring activities like Fishing, Paddling Sports, and World Class Diving.
A loop road will take you to several boat launches and there are a couple of small walking trails that will take you through State Champion Willow Oaks, Cypress, and Tupelo Trees.
Bald Eagles and Osprey are also often spotted on the lake.
