Hike to one of the tallest waterfalls in the state of Illinois.
Located in the Shawnee National Forest near Stonefort, Burden Falls, though perhaps small by other standards, is among the highest in Illinois. There are many side trails to explore, making this a great spot for birders and photographers.
The hike is a 0.8 mile moderately rated loop trail. Though short, the views of the waterfall are gorgeous. You’ll want to stop to take some photos. Visit after a day of rain to see the falls in full force. Wear appropriate footwear and watch your step as you will likely encounter wet leaves and slippery rock. It’s a fun trail to explore, but note that it is not well marked.
The trail to the falls is accessible year-round. It’s both family and dog friendly. It may not be the easiest for young kids and dogs must be kept leashed. The streams, waterfalls, and surrounding greenery make this a great spot for adventuring.
