About this place

Added by Rose Freeman

Wander through a pine and larch forest up to two alpine lakes located in a valley below Stevens Peak!

To get to the trailhead, drive east on I-90 to Lookout Pass. Turn right into the pass parking lot and continue on the railroad grade dirt road for approximately 6 miles. You will pass several trailheads, but continue on until you reach a fork in the road and a sign for the Stevens Lakes trailhead. Parking and a restroom is on the right side of the road and Stevens Lakes trailhead is on the left.

Before hiking, we made coffee at the trailhead at a nice picnic table area surrounded by golden larch trees!

This hike gains elevation quickly through a larch forest at an 8% grade. In the fall, the trail is dusted with a soft cover of larch needles. Once through the forest, the trail opens up to a valley where switchbacks lead you past a waterfall up a rocky hillside.

At the top of the waterfall, go another 1/2 mile to Lower Stevens Lake. Continue along the narrow shoreline trail up to Upper Stevens Lake at the base of Stevens Peak.

Backpack in for the night or make a day trip out of it! Excellent hike with the views of two alpine lakes!

Great hike, but it's grueling, considering it's nearly 1,900 ft. up a mountain in just 2.5 miles (to the upper lake). Beautiful views, plenty ...
