About this place

Added by James Hueser

The bird cliffs at Látrabjarg house a wide array of birds, including puffins! The cliffs are also very impressive as they rise 440 metres above the ocean.

Whether or not you choose to take the ferry from Stykk to Flókalundur, or make the entire drive along the south side of the West Fjords, you'll be taking the 612 to Látrabjarg. It's a mix of pavement and mostly gravel with typical Icelandic potholes. Even though it'd be a dream to take a 4x4 out here, it can be made with tiny little cars as long as you drive carefully!

At the end of the seemingly endless gravel road, you'll come to a parking lot - you'll likely have noticed the hundreds of birds flying overhead by now. Follow the trail along the cliffs - while avoiding getting too close (440 metres is a long way down!) - and you'll see just how this destination landed on Nat Geo's list of best ocean viewpoints.

If you're here mainly for the puffins, you're in luck as they make their nests right at the top of the cliffs! Very easy to get some excellent close-ups. I highly recommend walking and taking in most of the cliffs as they truly are spectacular, and deserve as many photos as the many species of birds do.

Impressive landscape, friendly puffins
The cliffs are simply stunning and especially if the weather is dark the overall scenery is beyond description. The wind can be pretty wild ...
