About this place

Added by Christin Healey

Take a guided tour of the magical ice caves in Iceland for an incredible perspective of the Vatnajökull glacier, Europe's largest ice cap, as well as unique photo opportunities.

There are quite a few companies that offer guided tours of ice caves throughout the country, but Extreme Iceland has the most options, as well as very experienced guides. Every fall the guides scout out the best caves, and they change weekly due to weather conditions. Although I have seen people doing this on their own, it's not recommended. A lot of the caves are not stable due to water flow and the ever moving glacier, not to mention their are no real roads to get there - you will be happy for the super jeep! Spring for the photo tour option if you want a smaller group and better photo opportunities.

Extreme Iceland offers hotel pick-up and drop-off as part of their service - which is awesome. The spot on the map is the Jukulsarlon Glacier Lagoon parking near the ice caves, but I must say again that is is ill-advised to explore without a guide as the stability of these ice caves can be unpredictable and dangerous. The whole area is beautiful however and a great spot to capture the northern lights.

Country Hotel Gerði has nice accommodations nearby if you need a place to stay.
