About this place

Added by Jeremy Meek

Hraunfossar (Lava Falls) is quite the unique waterfall, pouring out from a subterranean river into the Hvita River. Enjoy the cascades of water dancing out from the face of an enormous lava field!

A lesser known Icelandic waterfall, Hraunfossar is nonetheless beautiful and quite unique! Flowing out from beneath a gigantic lava flow, there is a magical quality to enjoying the subtlety of a waterfall resulting without a river above-ground feeding it. Hraunfossar could be viewed as a gigantic spring as much as it is a waterfall!

This is an easy stop as you are going to/from the lava tubes in the vicinity (Vidgelmir - paid/guided OR Surtshellir - free/self-guided...be careful!!). During the summer, there is even a small coffee shop at the parking area that you can stop for refreshments!
