About this place

Added by Mike Fennell

Take a mellow hike through a stunning valley full of gigantic waterfalls in the Westfjords of Iceland.

The trailhead for this hike is 9 km south of the town Súðavík at the inside tip of the fjord Álftafjörður. There‘s a small dirt parking lot off the road just before the small bridge. You can park your car here and begin your hike into the valley Seljalandsdalur.

At the south end of the parking lot, there is a trailhead sign that says 2 km to Valagil. Even from the trailhead you can see one of the gigantic gorge waterfalls at the far end of the valley. This waterfall will be visible for the entire hike, but the true gem is the gorge waterfall of Valagil, which you won't be able to see until you reach it. The trail is a narrow dirt path and is very easy to follow. The trail hugs the foothills of the western slope of the valley. The meadow to the east of the trail is pretty flat and easy enough to traverse if you want to go off the beaten path for a bit. After 2 km, it will be pretty obvious that you've reached Valagil. The giant gorge stands hundreds of feet above you as the water comes crashing down in a series of waterfalls.
