Hidden town providing endless mountain views surrounding the area. Great place to settle down for a couple days to adventure on local hikes and practice your birding near the local harbour. Here is where you can find puffins among many other species.
Every corner of Iceland will continue to surprise you in the most delightful way. Making the journey to the northeastern coast is no exception.
Borgarfjörður Eystri will provide you with panoramic mountain views, harbor exploration and the chance to photograph as many puffins as your heart desires. Expect the drive to the town to take a little longer than the hour any map might estimate. You'll want to make multiple stops along the way as you ascend and descend over the mountain pass that leads into town.
Camping: The campground located directly in town has a numerous amount of campsites. Facilities are clean and provide access to laundry machines, restrooms and wash houses. Hike up the Álfaborg (Elves Castle) believed to be where the Queen of the Icelandic Elves resides.
Puffins: Don't miss out on a chance to do a little birding while you're here. Continuing down the road about 5 minutes you'll end up at the local boat harbour. Right next to the harbour you'll be able to climb up the cliffs to find the puffin colony. This is a well maintained area provided with viewing decks for the best opportunities to catch the puffins in action.
