About this place

Added by Jake Myhre

Semuc Champey is not only stunningly beautiful but also geologically amazing! Consisting of a series of cascading pools, and ending in a waterfall, Semuc Champey is a must-see for anyone traveling Guatemala.

Nestled deep in the lush jungle of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, Semuc Champey is a breathtaking series of turquoise limestone pools cascading over a natural limestone bridge above the Cahabón River. Known for its vibrant colors, tranquil swimming spots, and scenic viewpoint (mirador), this remote paradise is one of the country’s most stunning natural attractions.

Hours of Operation

Semuc Champey is open daily from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It’s recommended to arrive early to beat the crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures during the hike to the mirador.

Entry Fees & Permits

  • Entrance Fee: Q50 (about $6.50 USD) per person (subject to change).

  • Permits: No special permits are required for general entry. If you’re traveling with a guide or as part of a tour, any necessary permissions are typically handled for you.

Getting There

Most travelers reach Semuc Champey from the nearby town of Lanquín, which is about a 45-minute to 1-hour bumpy ride away. Shuttles or 4x4 vehicles are common, as the road is rough and remote.

What to Expect

  • A steep 45-minute hike to the mirador rewards visitors with postcard-perfect views of the cascading pools.

  • Swimming is allowed in the calm limestone pools—bring a swimsuit and water shoes.

  • Guided tours often include nearby cave and river tubing adventures, ideal for thrill-seekers.

  • Facilities are basic: restrooms and snack vendors are available at the entrance.

Are Pets Allowed?

Pets are not permitted inside the park, as it is a protected natural reserve.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Bring insect repellent, waterproof shoes, and cash (no ATMs or card payments at the park).

  • Consider visiting during the dry season (November to April) for the clearest water and best weather conditions.

  • Local guides are available and can enhance your experience with knowledge about the area’s geology, wildlife, and Q’eqchi’ Maya culture.

Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer, or off-the-beaten-path adventurer, Semuc Champey is a must-see destination in Guatemala that rewards those who make the journey with unforgettable views and refreshing natural pools.

Semuc Champey is one of the most beautiful places I ever been. The river is crystal clear and the adventure in the cave is extreme.
