About this place

Discover an area of amazing rock formations

In Central Greece lies an area where enormous columns of rock rise from the ground. The area is called Meteora, which in greek means "suspended in space". The vertical rocks are an amazing and unbelievable sight to witness and can be seen from miles away.

Even more impressive to the geology of the area, is that fact that on top these rocks lies the largest complex of monasteries (only second to Mount Athos). The monasteries that are still fully operating date back to the 14th century and the first monks can really be considered pioneers of climbing. Indeed, the Meteora rocks are to this day one of the most famous and prestigious climbing sites in Greece, gathering thousands of climbers each year.

You can explore the rocks by driving around, making stops at numerous viewpoints and even visiting the monasteries. The closest city is the city of Kalambaka that provides all sorts of facilities. For climbers, the village of Kastraki (marked as the point on the map) is where you should start from.

Visiting the area in winter, when there is snow on the rocks, makes the whole place extraordinary and as such it is the time of year that I suggest the most. However, all year round, the area has a lot to offer to the explorer.
