Walk to Amir Ali Springs

On the northern side of the island of Kythera, lies the village of Karavas. It is one of the greenest areas of the island as a result of multiple water springs in the area. Once you enter the village, head for one of its older and most beautiful neighborhoods, Mavrogiorgianika, and from there there is a ravine that leads you to the fresh water springs of Amir Ali.

I suggest that you leave your car where I marked in the map and not proceed in the alley as it get pretty steep and narrow. At the end of the alley there is a wonderful bow bridge and a small square among huge trees. A trail starts from there, following the stream. The landscape is wonderful and the trail is shadowed by sycamore trees making a perfect getaway even for the hot summer days. Once at the spring (locals also call it the spring of Portokalia), there is a picnic area where you can rest and relax or maybe even eat if you are carrying food with you. The trail is not long, approximately 200m.

At the bridge in the beginning of the trail, there is an old house converted to a cafe/restaurant. It is a very nice stop to relax and chill out and maybe eat something. Another thing of note is that in the village of Karavas there is the traditional bakery where they make the famous rusks of Kythera. You should definitely try them out!
