About this place

Added by John Clairmont

Enjoy a mostly peaceful float down the Chestatee River, whether on kayak, tube, or canoe.

This six mile section of the Chestatee River is a safe, enjoyable float mostly away from civilization. There are several small rapids and bumpy areas (class 1) throughout, with two larger rapids (class 1-2) towards the end of the section. It does get pretty shallow in some sections, so keep watch and steer clear of bigger rocks! We saw many turtles sunbathing on the banks and on partially submerged branches, so keep your eye out! On average it should take about two hours to complete this section. There is a clearly marked sign hanging above the river for where kayakers should get out, right at Lumpkin County Park. The drive back to the start is just a short trek up the highway!

There are several rental companies along the river, all with equally good reviews. My wife and I ended up going with Chestatee River Adventures (where this adventure starting point is marked). It wasn't too expensive ($25 each for sit-on kayaks), and the time from arrival to getting on the river was super quick. They also had an option to park in their lot and take your own kayak down the river, and they'd pick you up and return you to the lot for just $5 each.
