Phinizy Swamp is one of Augusta’s hidden treasure troves of adventure. People that have lived in Augusta for years are shocked that a place this beautiful and unique exists minutes away from the downtown area!
Phinizy offers miles of nature trails around the swamp and an expansive wooden boardwalk that allows visitors to walk the 100 meters across the swampy water. If you get lucky, you may see some of the resident beavers, alligators, and bobcats in their natural habitats. The narrow trails through the woods around the swamp also expand into beautiful open fields of marshy grass and blue heron nesting grounds, which can easily be hiked in under an hour. Be sure to bring a pack dinner and arrive near golden hour to watch the sunset from their vaulted pavilion above the swamp. Phinizy Swamp is open 365 days a year, free to the public from dawn till dusk, and the visitors center is open on Saturdays and Sundays.
