About this place

Added by Daniel Madrigal

Distance: 16 miles roundtrip paddle. Easy trail. Lots of wildlife. Have a beach to yourself. Southernmost point of mainland USAAwesome sunset and sunrise.

Camp along a 3 mile stretch of untouched old Florida. Not only is this the real southernmost point in the continental US (the Keys are islands), but you will most likely have it to yourself. Spot dolphins, bald eagles, ospreys, and a ton of other birds on this awesome over nighter that is great for beginners and experts.

Depart from the Flamingo Marina and head west. Hug the shoreline for about 8 miles and you will know you are there when you see it. East Cape is a 3 mile stretch of beach at Florida's southernmost tip. The sunsets here are pretty magical. If you are feeling adventurous, take a detour into nearby Lake Ingraham for some world class fishing.

In the 1830's this was the site of Fort Poinsett, which was used by the US to fight in the Seminole Wars. Hurricanes have swept away anything that was left of the fort, but you can still hike around and attempt to find some artifacts.

The following morning, head back along the shoreline the same way you came and end your trip at the Flamingo Marina. Remember to use your tide charts.
