Due to its amazing marine life, snorkeling (and scuba diving) is one of the most popular activities that you can do in Galapagos Islands. As Isabela Island is one of the most pristine islands in the archipelago the snorkeling the "Tunnels" can be an unforgettable experience.
As Isabela is located west of the archipelago, it's hit directly by the Cromwell current, which is rich in oxygen and nutrients for many marine and terrestrial species not only in Isabela but for the whole archipelago.
From Puerto Villamil several snorkeling sites can be reached, but one stands out over the others: The Tunnels. This location is a unique geological formation produced by lava flows. The Tunnels can only be visited by booking at a tour operator.
In those snorkeling sites, many species such as marine turtles, marine iguanas, sea lions, sea horses, penguins and even Galapagos sharks can be spotted. But don't worry, they (the sharks) are harmless. The tour ends with a small hike above the tunnels where you can see many birds such as blue - footed boobies, albatross, frigate birds and even flamingos.
Anyway, if you don't feel like spending in booking a guided tour, there are other snorkeling sites that can be visit without paying entrance such as Concha y Perla which is located east of Puerto Villamil near the town's pier. In Concha y Perla you can see many colorful fish, marine iguanas, and sea turtles.
Isabela is my favourite island in Galapagos as it is a natural paradise where you can do many adventurous activities (beside snorkeling), and I am looking forward to get back there.
