Prime Hook Wildlife Refuge Loop

Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, located on the west side of the Delaware Bay, contains over 10,000 acres of protected habitat including salt marshes, freshwater marshes, ponds, wooded swamps, upland grasslands and forests. The refuge serves as an important stopover site as well as a breeding ground for many species of migratory birds. The area is also home to a diverse array of native plants and animals.

The entrance to the refuge is off of Broadkill Beach Road. To enter the refuge, tun onto Turkle Pond road and continue until it dead ends at the visitor center, where there are maps, restrooms, and a small gift shop.

The refuge offers many trails to explore. This adventure covers the following trails: 

•  Boardwalk Trail: 0.55 mile loop
  Park at the visitor center. The trailhead is near the boat dock by the parking lot. The path meanders through forest and over a freshwater marsh. 

• Dike Trail: 0.9 miles out-and-back
  This straight path follows a stretch of wetlands, and ends with an elevated observation platform overlooking the marsh. This trail is an excellent place to spot birds and other wildlife. Hike this trail at sunset for incredible views. 

ADDITIONAL OPTION

• Pine Grove Trail: 1.1 mile loop
  To access this trail, drive away from the visitor center back toward Broadkill Beach Road. Take the road on the right toward Turkle Pond, where there is a parking area. Park and walk up the road a short distance until reaching the trailhead on the right. Follow the trail markers through pine forests, and stop at the observation desk. The trail loops back to the Turkle Pond parking area.
