Higby Mountain Trail

The popular route for this hike is to park your car at the base of the trail which is located right before merging onto 91-S in Middlefield, CT. The parking lot does seem to get crowded mid-day, especially if the weather is nice! 

The beginning of the hike is mostly flatter land and an incline will begin. Be careful of the rocks! Some are not secured into the ground, but as this trail has been tread many times, you will recognize the best route to take. The winding trail marked by blue blazes will bring you to another flat section where you will then descend again. Another incline ahead! This last incline is the indicator that you're close your destination. Once near the top, you will most likely see people already taking pictures or relaxing and enjoying the view. 

This trail is a piece of the infamous Mattabesett Trail, a 50 mile long blue blazed trail that connects the New Haven, Hartford, and Middlesex counties. The final section of the Mattabesett Trail is Mt. Higby, which is a 2 mile long ridge that joins with the Metacomet Trail. If you were looking to adventure further, be careful! This trail leads to the Metacomet Traprock Ridgeline where focus is a must. This continuation hike is a little more advanced than the initial hike up Mt. Higby, but you won't be disappointed.
