Snowshoe Lost Lake

Driving through the towns of Nederlands and Eldora alone is a beautiful experience. Once you come up to Hessie Trailhead, you'll already be in a daze because you'll be staring at Eldora Mountain and will see some ski runs in the distance.

Getting to the trailhead early is best. Parking starts along the street next to the trailhead and fills up fast. Once you find a spot, grab your snowshoes and poles and start walking (or if you're anything like me, the first few steps in monster shoes is always quite humorous).

Follow the snow-packed trail (formerly a dirt road) for about .5 miles until you run into a creek. The creek may be frozen over depending on the season. Continue on for about .85 miles (follow the creek or the trail). Keep your eyes glued to the left and you will see a wooden cabin between the trees in the forest. Once you do, feel free to venture that direction to go exploring off path.

Back on trail, you'll get to an intersection where Kings Lake trail and Lost Lake trail split. Turn left (south) following signs for Lost Lake. The lake is located another half mile. This is where you'll be climbing the entire elevation (791 feet).

Feel free to take a break, eat a trail snack and enjoy the view. You made it! It's amazing to me that you can walk on the middle of this frozen lake.

Once you're done resting, turn around and head back. There are plenty of great spots to stop and grab food between Eldora and Denver.
